Tom was educated at Wellingborough Grammar School and gained a Kitchener Scholarship to read geography at University College London in 1972. He was appointed as a research assistant on graduation and undertook three years' research in historical geography at UCL. Tom has pursued two separate careers, one in commerce and the other in the military serving as a platoon commander in the 1st and 2nd battalions of The Royal Anglian Regiment and, subsequently, 14 years in the TA. Battle on the Beach (2013)
Gold Beach is the story of the highly successful assault by 50th Northumbrian Division and 231 Malta Bde on the central beach of the Allied D day landings. The beach was one of the 2 extra beaches that Montgomery had added to the COSSAC plan and the two veteran formations chosen were highly successful achieving nearly all their objectives despite some hard and bloody fighting. It was on this beach that WO2 Stan Hollis won the only VC of D Day.
