Shekhara Menon (Thilakan) is retired income tax officer from Mumbai and has now settled in a remote village in Kerala. He owns some land and a house where he and his three daughters live together and leads a calm, silent and happy life. Menon owns a smaller house adjacent to his own which is given for rent, Hareendran (Mammootty) is a struggling small time contractor and comes in as a new tenant to the rented house.

Gauridasa Menon is a stringent patriot and is an advocate of speaking only mother tongue. A comedy of errors ensue when Hariprasad, a modern youngster with a westernized attitude has to camouflage himself to get a job in Menon's company.

Gopinathan (Jagadish) works as a textile shop salesman who struggles to make ends meet. Returning from work one day, he accidentally comes in possession of a suitcase from a criminal being chased by the police. The suitcase contains gold and Gopi thinks that it will end his troubles; however things are not easy as it seems.

The story is about convict Sathyanathan (Mohanlal) sentenced to death following multiple murders (of two adult men and two girl-children) he has committed and his subsequent prison life till death. The film focuses on his past and the chain of events leading to the crime and how a retelling of the tale, inadvertently, impacts the prison doctor Dr. Nambiar (Thilakan), who is the father of the male victim Vijayan (Mahesh).
